trip to the pond

I am so grateful to a friend for sharing the location of the local secret swimming spot. Our family is not welcome at the pool because of their "no float" rule - no life jackets, no wings, nothing. With 1 semi-swimmer and 2 non-swimmers I just don't have enough Mommy arms to go around.
The pond is only 15 minutes away and I can pull the van in right beside the short curve of gravel they call a beach in Maine.

Actually, it is quite lovely, a primitive spot with a view of nothing but sky, trees and water. There are tadpoles and frogs in the shallows, leeches in the swampy part, and a short trail out to the point. Last time we ventured out it was a chilly windy day so we had the place all to ourselves.

The older kids take the little ones out for rides in the inflatable boat. They play games, build towers on the beach, and just enjoy the short Maine summer. The temperatures are already drifting down, it didn't get above 80 today and is dipping into the 40s at night. This is the last week of summer fun left before everyone begins school, so we have to cram trips to the beach and pond and a day in Freeport in the next week.

Enjoy your summer while it lasts!

That looks peaceful and tranquil. What fun!

Beaches are better than pools. Our pool has a no float rule, too, unless it is coast guard approved. Yeah, that makes it safer for the little ones...

It looks like a lovely place to use the floats. I think the tranquility of the natural environment will also make the swimming more fun--while it lasts.
Summer seems short here in the southwest! How much shorter it must seem in Maine!
